Major components of the basic training
- Techniques apply to interpersonal, and group conflicts as well as what to do when you’re by yourself and you come upon someone being harassed (bystander intervention)
- Stories of empowerment, from one-on-one conflict situations to local and international peace teams
- Understanding the sacred interconnectedness of all things: The theoretical and spiritual basis of nonviolence
- Uncovering the hidden roots of violence
- Reviewing the theory and practice of communication skills: Active Listening, “I” messages; and the CLARA technique
- Experience the power of working in teams
- Mechanisms for social change
- Reviewing the cycle of violence, cultural and racial sensitivity, and the reality of power & privilege
- Skills for deescalating potentially-violent situations
- Direct practice through role plays, quick decision exercises, and “hassle lines”
